Understanding your marketplace technology stack
During my engagement with Airbnb, I contributed to an important update of their host signup landing page, focusing on creating a more engaging and educational experience for potential hosts. To better address user needs and streamline the onboarding process, I recommended the creation of a knowledge hub to make hosting less overwhelming for individuals. Part of this effort included revamping Airbnb’s core host signup landing page to highlight the value proposition of the company while addressing concerns that cause hesitation.
The landing page redesign was centered on three key ideas:
- Showcasing the benefits of hosting: Highlighting opportunities for earning income and sharing unique spaces with guests.
- Simplifying the signup journey: Incorporating step-by-step guides and FAQs to address common concerns and make hosting more approachable.
- Building trust through real-life stories: Featuring testimonials from successful hosts to inspire confidence in new users.
These efforts aligned with Airbnb’s broader growth trajectory, during which the platform experienced remarkable success. Between 2017 and 2018, Airbnb’s total listings grew by 50%, from 4 million to 6 million, and its gross booking value rose by 40.4%, from $20.97 billion to $29.44 billion.
