Notice how every “I left the Bay Area” essay sounds like every other “I left the Bay Area” essay. The cost-of-living paragraph. The traffic paragraph. The politics paragraph. The wistful aerial of the bridge. The closing scene with a moving truck and a metaphor about light.

Lately the genre has a new mandatory beat: COVID broke the city. The energy is gone, the soul left, the magic dimmed. Same essay, new villain.

I’m leaving the Bay Area after a decade and I’m not going to write that essay. Not because I think those writers are always wrong. Because the template itself is doing something I don’t want to do.

What every version of the essay has in common is that it makes leaving sound like a verdict on the city. The city failed me. The city changed. The city is over. Even the gracious versions (“I’ll miss it, but…”) rest on the same scaffolding: the place is what changed; I’m responding.

That framing is almost always a polite cover for something more private and harder to write. People leave because they failed, because they ran out of social runway, because the conversation started repeating with new faces, because they noticed they were chasing proximity to ambition instead of doing the ambitious thing. Those are real reasons. The template lets writers swap them out for rent.

None of that is my story. And the more honest move, for me, is to say what it actually was.

I arrived in the Bay Area as someone who had failed out of college. I had no real opportunity in front of me and, frankly, nothing to lose. What pulled me here wasn’t the weather or the salary. It was the culture: the specific dense, slightly unreasonable belief that anyone could become something here if they showed up and worked.

The Bay Area honored that bargain. eBay was the fast-track. Earning my master’s in library and information science was the credential. The work has compounded into leading complex, high-stakes initiatives I would not have been remotely qualified for ten years ago. I came here to become a better person. I am leaving a better person. That sentence is the whole point of the decade.

People always ask if there was a moment. There wasn’t, really, and the fact that there wasn’t is part of what I want to say.

What actually happened was quieter. A close friend moved to Nevada. I started visiting. Then I visited again. Over a couple of years, the place stopped being unfamiliar, and at some point, I can’t tell you which trip, I noticed I wasn’t surprised by anything anymore, and I was easier in my body when I was there. It wasn’t a verdict on California. It was a warming-up to somewhere else.

Finishing the master’s was the inflection. Not because the degree made me leave. Because finishing it made the plateau visible. I’d done the specific thing the Bay Area was uniquely suited to help me do.

There’s a line attributed to Bill Gates: “Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years.” That has been the shape of my decade. The version of “making it” I could have described in year one didn’t happen. The version I’m leaving with isn’t one I could have imagined then.

The next thing, whatever it turns out to be, didn’t seem to require this zip code.

A lot of my friends are leaving on similar timelines. None of us are bitter. Most of us got a version of what we came for. We’re scattering not because the place broke, but because the place did its job, and the next jobs aren’t ones it has a monopoly on anymore.

What I notice from here is innovation existing elsewhere now, the network dispersing, a quieter pull toward less expensive places. All of it could be the area changing, or me outgrowing the chapter, or both. I don’t actually know. The cliched essays resolve that uncertainty fast, in favor of the city being the thing that changed. I’d rather sit with the question. It’s the more honest description of how leaving feels from the inside.

What I keep coming back to is this. The Bay Area is still a great place to be. You can do plenty out here. Whether it’s the right place for you depends on what you’re looking for, and for me, what I was looking for got met. Specifically. Completely. With more generosity than I expected.

The cliched essay is structured so leaving sounds like a judgment on the city. Mine isn’t. The city did exactly what it was meant to do for me. The next chapter just happens to be somewhere else.
